Newcastle City Council's business briefing email service has revealed that East Pilgrim Street is to benefit from a series of short to medium term improvements, undertaken by the council with partners 1NG and NE1.
The agencies will work closely with landowners and other key stakeholders on the refurbishment and re-use of buildings, some demolition and an interim strategy for re-use of cleared sites.
Interim Planning Guidance for the re-development of the 17-hectare East Pilgrim Street site was approved in 2009 to provide clarity for developers and landowners on the council’s aspirations for the area.
The development will create a new sustainable retail-led mixed-use quarter of the city which will assist in the rebranding of the city centre as a modern and dynamic regional centre, the council said.
The development is likely to be phased over the next 10 years, beginning in the southern area of Pilgrim Street over the next few years.
