New office space shows confidence in region

Work is now under way on the latest addition to the Quorum Business Park in Newcastle.

Q12 represents an additional 90,000sq ft of speculative space, and adds to the 120,000sq ft created last year, emphasising confidence in the region’s business credentials.

The completed development could see hundreds more jobs coming to the North East, adding to the 1,500 jobs brought when Tesco Bank and Convergys relocated to Quorum last year.

Fergus Trim, development director at Quorum Development Partners, told Renaissance: "We had a good last year, building 120,000sq ft but letting 150,000sq ft. If you are letting more space than you are building then you are fairly confident in progressing.

"To get Tesco Bank to come to Newcastle, when we were up against all the other main regional cities - Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool - and to get them to come to the North East and bring 1,000 new jobs with them, was obviously great news. They took our biggest building, 100,000sq ft, and that really justifies having another building coming forward."

Trim also spoke of the confidence he has in the region as a whole, as it seeks to navigate its way further away from the downturn. "I think the North East has a great deal to offer, particularly at the moment when people are cost conscious," he said.

"You look at property costs and staff costs, and there is a price advantage here. And you’re getting real quality, both in terms of the buildings and the people."
