Contentious discussion kicks off new blog

Newcastle developer Adam Serfontein has opened a blog, linked to Renaissance Magazine, to share thoughts and discussion about development and regeneration in Newcastle.
 
Serfontein is managing director of Hanro, the company behind the proposed Strawberry Place scheme and the successful Cooper's Studios development.
 
Serfontein's opening blog asks: "Has the planning process improved in NewcastleGateshead?". He states: "If we are to stand a chance of attracting inward investment, which is the only real way to grow our city meaningfully, we must have buildings of scale and quality. We must demonstrate that these may be delivered with the public sector being part of the team and not an opposing force."
 
Newcastle City Council has been quick to respond, with director of environment and regeneration David Slater commenting: "We want developers to get a good quality service, from pre-application to post-development, adoption and maintenance where this is appropriate. We believe we are further on with this than Adam suggests, but let’s see what others have to say…"
