The car giant has been handed £20m from the Government and offered a £197m European loan to help refit the factory for the work.

The move will safeguard more than 2,000 jobs and create hundreds more in the supply chain and will make the Washington plant the largest in Europe.

Production is set to begin in early 2013 with at least 50,000 cars a year rolling out of the factory.

Nissan also revealed its sister plant in Sunderland will start work producing the batteries for electric cars next month.

Between them the two factories bring together more than £420m investment to the North East.

Regional Minister Nick Brown, said: "Winning the battery factory for Sunderland was a great achievement. We have now built on this by today’s truly exciting announcement."
