Ten years after the vision for the Scotswood area of Newcastle was unveiled and whole streets were demolished, work to build houses has started.
Thanks to millions of pounds of Government cash, contractors will work to clear and level the land left bare after hundreds of homes were pulled down.
They also will put in underground pipes to pave the way for housebuilding to start.
Martin Walker, Newcastle City Council’s area director of regeneration for the West End, said: "This work demonstrates we are pressing ahead with the scheme.
"It has taken a long time to get to this point, and there have been a lot of issues. But now this is about putting things in place to build houses, rather than demolishing them."
