Newcastle City Council has emerged as a frontrunner to form a new type of public-private affordable housing vehicle after it appointed a preferred private sector partner to its emerging local housing company. (Sourced from Regen and Renewal.)

The council's executive has approved plans for a joint venture with consortium Barratt Keepmoat Yuill that is intended to last for at least 15 years and deliver 1,800 homes in the Scotswood regeneration area.

Along with the homes, the redevelopment is planned to include leisure and community facilities on the cleared 60ha site.

The creation of the local housing company vehicle is subject to the signing of a detailed 15-year business plan, covering contractual, financial and governance arrangements.
