Full steam ahead for Metro redevelopment

A Tyne and Wear Metrocar travelled through the North East streets by lorry on 21 June – marking the start of a £20 million refurbishment for the entire Metro fleet.

And only a day later new Chancellor George Osborne confirmed the coalition Government’s ongoing commitment to invest up to £350 million in modernising the Metro system.

The challenging operation to transport the 40-tonne Metrocar to Doncaster, where it will receive specialist improvement work, will have to be repeated many times over the next five years as the fleet is upgraded.

These upgrades form a significant part of the Metro’s All Change modernisation programme, which was safeguarded at the recent emergency Budget.

Bernard Garner, director general of Nexus, said: “We are delighted the Chancellor has recognised, in confirming this investment, the vital role that Metro plays in the economic fortunes of North East England.

“Every pound spent on renewing Metro is worth up to £8 to the local economy in supporting city centre businesses, reducing congestion and driving workforce flexibility.”
