Green boost for Newcastle’s science credentials

Newcastle’s prowess as a Science City was further highlighted when scientists at Newcastle University completed the first phase of a giant central heating system that will harness heat from deep underground.
The first hot water was pumped out of the ground on 23 June as part of the landmark project to investigate the potential of geothermal energy as a source of renewable heat.

Placing the economy, people and places at its heart, the 1Plan sets out how NewcastleGateshead’s competitiveness can be increased over the coming years.

Riverside Dene welcomes residents

The first residents have given the thumbs up to their new homes in the refurbished tower blocks at Riverside Dene.
Five of Cruddas Park’s 10 blocks have been brought up to 21st century standards as the council and its partners seek to continue the dramatic transformation of the estate.

Paul Woods is named Finance Director of the Year

Newcastle City Council’s director of finance and resources Paul Woods was named Finance Director of the Year in the North East Accountancy Awards 2010.
Woods, who topped a shortlist of five to scoop the prize, received his award in a glittering ceremony at the Newcastle Marriott Hotel.

Full steam ahead for Metro redevelopment

A Tyne and Wear Metrocar travelled through the North East streets by lorry on 21 June – marking the start of a Ł20 million refurbishment for the entire Metro fleet.
And only a day later new Chancellor George Osborne confirmed the coalition Government’s ongoing commitment to invest up to Ł350 million in modernising the Metro system.
The challenging operation to transport the 40-tonne Metrocar to Doncaster, where it will receive specialist improvement work, will have to be repeated many times over the next five years as the fleet is upgraded.
